The N1 up to Kikwit is near flawless, but becomes worse by the mile heading east. At the point where I left the N1 towards Gungu the road surface showed some serious signs of detoriation, by Western standards, meaning there were gaps of up to 5m long where the tarmac was missing.
The sand piste after the N1 is awful for motorcyclists, but easily wide enough for trucks. There is some mining going on in the region and the lorry drivers do not care if there's a Mundele in the way or not.
