1. Sandown - Alverstone

Starting at Sandown Train Station. Take the right hand car park exit on to the Sunshine Trail. At the entrance to Los Altos Park, turn right into the railway underpass - Cycle Route 23. After the underpass follow the shared path sign, (Nunwell Trail/Cycle Route 23) down the track until it meets the road.

Keep to the road, andgo past the Golf Course entrance. Before the 'Adgestone Camping' sign, turn left. You are now leaving the Sunshine Trail.

Follow this bridleway to the bridges, crossing straight over the streams, to another gate.

Follow this narrow path in a square shape around the field, past the Nature Reserve, and then turn right, and uphill, to meet the main road.

Cross the road into Youngwoods Way. Continue for 300 metres to just past the 30mph sign, where you turn right on to the NC42 to Alverstone. Follow this track downhill to the road, where you turn left.
2. Alverstone - Arreton

Go over the bridge and the Cycle Track, and continue through Alverstone village until the road turns sharply right. Turn left and uphill on the road sign-posted: 'No Access to the Downs' .

Keep following the road up past Chiddles Farm, until the road stops at Kern Farm.

Go through the gate and turn left to follow the B35 to Knighton. At the gate go straight on, keeping to the obvious track ahead. After 200 metres, turn right on to the NC5 to Knighton East Wood.

It's a straight forward climb, but 20 metres before the road, turn left down the unmarked bridleway which goes steeply downwards, meeting another road at the site of Knighton Gorges Manor.

Turn left on the road past the stone gate posts. When you reach the fork after 600 metres, keep right on the main road. Keep going on this narrow stretch of road for 400 metres, until you meet a grass island, with road signs. Turn right following the sign for 'Newport'.

After 160 metres, care is required here, turn left on an unmarked bridleway just before the houses.

The next 2.5 kilometres are across sandy farm tracks, flat, but hard going. There's a small dog leg in the middle on of one field, other than that it's very straightforward.

You will eventually reach the road at School Lane, in the village of Arreton, where you carry on to meet the main road.
3. Arreton - Newport

The next road section is not long, but it's a very busy road.

Turn right, going past the White Lion pub, and past Arreton Barns - both of course serving cold refreshments!

When you reach the crossroads, turn right, then immediately right to join the Byway.

You have a steady climb uphill to the ridge of St. George's Down. On the ridge, the track is very obvious and is marked as the 'Bembridge Trail'.

Keep to the ridge for 2 kilometres, where you meet a steep road just past the Golf Club entrance. Follow this downhill, and just before the the road starts to climb upwards at the National Speed limit sign, you cross the busy main road here.
4. Newport - Sandown

Opposite the Bengal Palace restaurant, a mock Tudor building, you join the National Cycle Route 23 by turning left.

Remain on the cycle track for 5.5 kilometres, crossing two roads on the journey. At the final road crossing at Merstone, continue until you meet our first Bridge.

At the bridge, take the track on your right, which takes you to the top of the bridge.

At the top of the bridge turn left to cross over the bridge.

When you meet the junction, after 550 metres, turn right on to the A3 to Redway

Just before the entrance to Redway Farm bear left following the wooden Bridleway Sign. You have a gentle climb. At the top, turn left, and then right, following the outside of the field.

Keep on the bridleway, and after you've gone alongside the house. Continue by crossing the road, and going through the field. Please don't use the road.

After you've crossed the field and joined the road, bear left, to re-join the Cycle Track.

At the main road at Horringford, where you cross the road, via the pelican crossing, to stay on the Cycle Track.

You will now remain on the cycle track going straight over the road at Alverstone, until you reach the outskirts of Sandown at the next road crossing.

At this last road crossing, immediately go right towards the 'Lake Sign'.

Remain on the road past the school playing fields, where you turn left to re-join the shared path, back to our start point at Sandown Station.
